COW FACTS - THE GUERNSEY BREED

The Guernsey breed was imported on to the Island of Guernsey by a group of monks about 1000 years ago.
They are thought to have brought the original Guernsey cattle from nearby France.
- The breed developed in isolation over the years.
- The UK breed society was formed in 1842.
- Guernsey milk is rich in beta-carotene, giving it that lovely golden colour.
- Guernsey cows have a gentle disposition, can tolerate the heat well and are good grass grazers.
- Guernseys are brown or fawn with white spots of various sizes on the body or face.
- The muzzle, hooves and udder are not pigmented.
- The cows weigh on average 500kgs.
- On average they produce milk of:
4.65% Butterfat
3.55% Protein
