COW FACTS - THE JERSEY BREED
- There have been Jersey cows on the Island of Jersey for over 1000 years.
- The Jersey breed has been guaranteed purebred since 1763.
- The UK Breed Society was formed in 1883.
- The Jersey cow can produce rich milk with a butterfat level up to about 6.8%.
- They are the most heat tolerant of all dairy cows.
- The cows are both docile and intelligent.
- Jerseys are typically a shade of fawn, but can be grey, reddish or spotted white.
- Whatever the colour, the underside is always lighter.
- A light band appears around the muzzle.
- The muzzle is typically black, but can be buff-coloured.

- The Jersey has a broad face with prominent eyes and lovely long eyelashes.
- The Jersey is a refined, cute cow, with a wedgy (bony) body shape.
- The cows weigh on average 450kg.
- On average they produce milk of:
5.5% Butterfat
3.85% Protein - The Jersey is the second most popular breed in the UK.
